There is a definite autumnal feel in the air as August draws to an end. We’ve enjoyed one of the best summers for many years with very high temperatures for most of July and a long dry spell. Unfortunately August has been quite wet and humid but overall we can’t complain too much, and we Irish do love to talk about the weather…all the time!

For Solas Ireland August has been a great month for wildlife sightings. We’ve seen foxes; hares; lots of rabbits (which are very active at the moment); bats and birds of prey, as well as pods of dolphins and porpoises, some in very close proximity to the Solas Ireland H.Q. Personally my greatest delight this month has been hearing the elusive Corncrake which comes to Ireland to breed over the summer months. Unfortunately, the breeding numbers of this very shy and secretive bird are in severe decline and it is now classed as endangered. Its’ kerrx-kerrx call is very distinctive and while the Corncrake won’t win any singing competitions it is a great privilege to hear its’ very distinctive call.

アイルランド、ドネゴールはイニッシュオーエンから初秋のお便りです

こちら8月下旬のイニッシュオーエンでは、秋の気配が足早にやってきています。7月の大半は、ここ何年振りかの好天に恵まれ、 夏らしい気温が長く続いたように感じました。一方で、8月はと云うと雨がよく降り、雨による湿気付いた天気がまたやってきた感が 否めません。天気の話が大好きなアイルランド人にとっては、次のクリスマスまで続くいつもの話題が帰ってきたってところでしょうか。（笑） 

ソーラスアイルランドにとっての8月は、ワイルドライフ観光にとって素晴らしいものでした。イルカの群れやウバザメ達だけでなく、キツネ、 野うさぎやアナウサギ（今の時季はとっても活発に活動しています。）コウモリ、野鳥達がここソーラスアイルランドのすぐ近くで見ることが できます。個人的に嬉しいのは、この時季、繁殖の為にアイルランドに渡ってくるウズラクイナの鳴き声に出会えることです。非常に残念 なことですが、ウズラクイナの繁殖数は減る一方で今や絶滅危惧種に分類されています。カークス・カークス(kerrx-kerrx)と云う特有の 鳴き声は、どんな鳴き声コンテストでも優勝することのないものかもしれません。しかし、とても特徴的なその鳴き声は気高く魅力的でも あります。以下のウエッブサイトでその興味深い鳴き声をお聞きいただけます。(URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ks2taH61mn8)

We’ve been enjoying amazing weather this week and the warmest temperatures for 7 years. 15 hours of sunshine were recorded on Monday so needless to say everyone is smiling. Inishowen is definitely heavenly in the sunshine!

The recent spell of good weather in June and again this week has brought a wonderful array of marine life close to the Inishowen coastline. Sightings of Orca, basking sharks and dolphins have been reported, particularly off Malin Head (Ireland’s most northerly point). In fact Inishowen is such a rich location for marine life that it has become an established research location for the study of basking sharks. Set up in 2008 the Inishowen basking shark study group have undertaken internationally significant research projects in the area which have attracted the international media. Inishowen is becoming an international 'hot spot'  for viewing marine life.

Inishowen is fast becoming recognised one of the top locations in Europe to see basking sharks with a single sighting of 50 reported in recent weeks. On a recent coastal walk I was lucky enough to watch a pod of dolphins and porpoises hunting and playing while we ate our sandwiches…lunch with a great view!

ここイニッシュオーエンでは、今週とても良いお天気に恵まれています。ここ7年間暖かな気候が続いています。 月曜日は、一日のうちで15時間も太陽の光が降り注ぎ、多くの人がそれを享受しています。いま、イニッシュ オーエンでは、一年で一番素敵な夏の日差しを迎えています！ 6月と今週の好天は、イニッシュオーエン沿岸の海洋生物に素晴らしい変化をもたらしてくれています。シャチ、 ウバザメ、イルカの目撃情報が寄せられているのです。特に、マリン岬（アイルランド島最北端）近海で多く 発見されています。イニッシュオーエン近海は、海洋生物の宝庫であり、ウバザメの調査地として定着して います。イニッシュオーエンウバザメ調査隊（the Inishowen basking shark study group）が、2008年に 創設されて国際的調査プロジェクトを開始しました。当時、国際メディアに大きく取り上げられました。 (http://www.baskingshark.ie)
 
イニッシュオーエン沿岸は国際的に海洋生物観察の”ホットスポット”となりつつあります。

Gorse Season has begun…

Spring is almost in full bloom now and on a fine morning recently I detected the aroma of one my favorite plants, Gorse, or Whins, as it is known as locally (also known as Furze). During its’ Spring flowering period, it now seems to be in flower for much of the year, this native shrub gives off the most amazing coconut smell. Such an exotic surprise considering how unfriendly and dour this plant appears with its spikes and thorns. Its’ vibrant flowers transform our countryside into a brilliant spectacle of yellow, truly one of the Season’s most beautiful sights.
Gorse is not just a pretty sight though. Traditionally it is also linked to
medicinal uses as the following piece of folklore informs us….

'Get a few handfuls of the yellow blossoms of the furze and boil them in water.
Give the water as a dose to the horse and this will cure worms'.

The famous homoeopath, Dr Edward Bach identified Gorse as a remedy for uncertainty. Apparently when used as a herbal remedy Gorse helps persuade us to see things in a different light and thus find a new way forward.

In Irish mythology gorse was also used ceremonially in torches and wreathes for the Celtic festivals of Imbolc (St Bridget’s Day) and Bealtaine, a "spring time festival of optimism" held at the beginning of May.

There is more to the humble Gorse than you might imagine. Considered an invasive pest by many today, it is very much part of our cultural heritage and was considered a valuable resource by our ancestors due to its many uses. Like the Cherry Blossom Festival in Japan, perhaps it’s time we began to celebrate our native Gorse and the delight it brings us each Spring.

ハリエニシダ（Gorse）の季節です。

こちらイニッシュオーエンでは、気持ちよい朝が訪れるようになり本格的な春を 迎えようとしています。私の好きなハリエニシダの花の香りが漂う季節となりました。 ハリエニシダをゴース(Gorse)と呼びますが、地元ではウィンズ(Whins)や ファーズ(Furze)とも呼ばれています。寒い日が多いアイルランドでは、今が 一年で一番花が咲きほこる季節であります。低潅木で群生し黄色い花を咲かす ハリエニシダは、何とココナッツに似た甘い香りを辺り一面に振りまいてくれ るのです。枝や葉に鋭い刺があって人を寄せ付けない印象を与える花ですが、 この芳しいアロマに酔いしれてしまいそうになります。緑の床に辺り一面に 咲き乱れる黄色の絨毯は、田舎の風景を春色に染めてくれます。この季節の 美しい風景のひとコマです。
ハリエニシダは、ただ美しいだけの花ではないのです。古くから薬用に使われていた と言い伝えられています。『手のひら一杯のハリエニシダの黄色い花を沸騰したお 湯で煮ます。煮汁を馬に飲ませてやると、寄生虫駆除に効く。』との事です。 (出典：http://www.wildflowersofireland.net/plant_detail.php?id_flower=109）

有名な同種療法学者（人体の自然治癒力を引き出すことを目的にした治療分野の一種） E.バッハ博士は、ハリエニシダが情緒不安の治療に効くことを確認しています。ハーブ 治療として使われる際にハリエニシダは、人の考えを前向きに作用させる効能があるとされています。

アイルランド神話では、毎年5月の初めに行われるケルトのお祭りであるインボルク

(聖ブリジットの日)やベアルテイン(春のお祭り)にハリエニシダが祭事用の松明や花輪に

使われていたとの事です。

ハリエニシダは、見た目以上に立派な花です。たくさんの害虫が存在するにもかかわらず、 それは、我々の文化遺産であり、その利用価値において先祖代々とても重宝されてきました。 まるで日本の桜のような存在で、我々にとって多分にハリエニシダを愛でる季節であり、 春の訪れを感じさせてくれる存在なのだと思われます。

イニッシュ オーエンに春がやってきました。長めの冬ごもりから解き放たれ、新しい生命が芽生える季節の始まりです。今年の3月は、アイルランド島全体に寒波が到来しまた、雪もたくさん降った影響で例年と比べると春も道半ばといった状況です。1969年以来の記録的寒さの 3月に思わず、昔の童謡が思い出されます。

“The March winds do blow and we shall have snow
and what will poor robin do then, poor thing?
He’ll hide in the barn to keep himself warm
and hide his head under his wing, poor thing.”

幸運にもイニッシュ オーエン地方は悪天候を免れ、鳥達に豊かな食料を用意できているようです。また、羊の出産ラッシュもこの時季の名物！動植物にとって今年の春は寒いスタートとなったことでしょう。かわいい子羊たちは、少しでも暖を得ようとお母さん羊に寄り添っています。


今の時季、スノードロップやクロッカスからスイセンの花にとって代わろうとしています。古代ギリシア人は、水仙の黄金の花が虚栄心に満ちたナルキッソスに起源をもっているものと信じています。、ギリシャ神の一人ナルキッソスは、泉に映った（自分の）美しい姿に取り憑かれ、離れることが出来ずに死ぬまで泉の畔で過ごし、その後亡骸が水仙の花に化けたと云う伝説の主です。スイセンの花は、『片想い』の象徴であると広く受け入れられています。

我家の庭に咲くスイセンです。素敵でしょ。

先週末から時間も進みました。サマータイムの始まりです。日本とは8時間の時差となります（例：日本が正午の時、アイルランドは当日午前4時）。夜も午後8時ごろまで明るく、これから真夏に向かって明るい時間帯が日々数分ずつ伸びてゆきます。現地では、皆この時季を心待ちにしています。長くどんよりした冬の天気から開放されるからです。

そして、週末はイースターでしたね。アイルランドでは、宗教的に重要な休日期間となります。また、チョコレートをたくさん食べることが出来る期間でもあります！『グッド フライデー』の祝日は、アイルランド共和国でパブが営業してはいけない2日間のうちの一日に当たります。『イースターサンデー』の日曜日は、この祝日期間で最も大切な日となり、『イースター エッグ』を分け合う習慣があります。翌日の『イースター マンデー』も祝日と なり、チョコレートを食べ過ぎた人にはちょうど良い休養日となります。。。

Welcome to spring in Inishowen, a wonderful time when we all begin to come out of hibernation and new life begins to emerge. This year Spring has only half-sprung with March bringing icy winds and snow to many parts of Ireland. With the coldest March on record since 1969, the old nursery rhyme comes to mind:

“The March winds do blow and we shall have snow
and what will poor robin do then, poor thing?
He’ll hide in the barn to keep himself warm
and hide his head under his wing, poor thing.”

Luckily Inishowen has escaped the worst of the weather but we have been doing our best to leave out plenty of food for the birds. Lambing season is also in full swing. The bad weather has meant a very cold start for some new arrivals…. these wee lambs are staying close to Mum for extra warmth!


With the snowdrops and crocuses now over the daffodils tentatively are beginning to flower. The ancient Greeks believed these golden blooms originated from Narcissus who was famed for his vanity. Legend has it that he became so obsessed with his reflection in a pool he could not bear to leave and eventually died there. It is said that the Greek gods turned his remains into the narcissus flower, or daffodil, as it is commonly known. As a result the daffodil is also considered a symbol of unrequited love. The clocks also went forward this weekend commencing the beginning of Summer Time (or Daylight Saving Time). The evenings are now bright until after 8pm and it will continue to get brighter by a few minutes each day until Midsummer when it starts going backwards again. This is an event that must make just about everyone happy…the long dark evenings are now over!

This weekend was also Easter, one of our main religious holidays and also a great time for eating lots of…chocolate! Good Friday is a public holiday and one of only two days in the Republic of Ireland when the pubs are prohibited from opening. Easter Sunday is the high point of this religious festival and on this day we have the custom of giving Easter Eggs. The next day, Easter Monday, is also a public holiday and a good day to recover from the excesses of eating too much chocolate!
